Ghost of Yotei on PS5: Launch Day, Early Reviews and Game Size Information

Ghost of Yotei Banner Artwok - Review of the newest PS5 AAA title

What Is Ghost of Yotei?

Ghost of Yotei is an upcoming action adventure and open world title developed by Sucker Punch Productions. It acts as a “spiritual successor” to Ghost of Tsushima one of my all time favourite Sony Exclusives. My fiancé was also obsessed with the game and we had to battle each other to take turns progressing through the stunning game. Jenny loved it so much she ended up completing 100% and achieved the platinum trophy!

Set in the year 1603, more than three centuries after the events of Tsushima, it shifts the setting from Tsushima to the northern island of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) around Mount Yotei. You play as Atsu, a lone mercenary whose family was slaughtered by a group known as the “Yotei Six.” Her journey is one of vengeance, but also discovery as she seeks out each of the Six, unravels their motivations, and explores a harsh snowy terrain full of hidden shrines, enemy camps, wildlife, side quests and secrets.

The game is built to take advantage of PS5 hardware with enhanced visuals, 3D audio, haptics, more detailed snow, and dynamic environmental effects are part of the pitch. An exciting note is that a multiplayer Legends mode is planned to be added for free in 2026.

My Opinion

I personally cannot wait to get stuck into playing Ghost of Yotei tonight. I know I am going to absolutely love it. Recently we upgraded to a PS5 Pro and I very much enjoyed Ghost of Tsushima. The enhancements the PS5 Pro comes with will make this game look and feel even more incredible than the previous title. It is currently downloading as I write this blog and after working long days preparing and launching two new ArcaLoot Mousepads that dropped a few days ago, this will be the perfect game to unwind and become immersed in.

I think the game will be an incredible journey and very much look forward to seeing what the Multiplayer Legends mode brings. Once I have put a solid chunk of time into the game, I will post a follow up blog with my review and thoughts of the game.

Edit: I played 5 hours and it is SO GOOD. Looking forward to playing some more and writing another blog on my overall feedback. Very enjoyable so far and excited to continue the story.

Day-One Patch & Final Game Size

Ghost of Yotei will ship with a day-one patch (version 1.006) that must be applied before play. According to reports this patch covers around 79 adjustments/improvements, spanning performance, stability, ray tracing, mission optimizations, UI improvements, crash fixes, and environmental detail upgrades.

As for size: before patch a digital preload reports 85.119 GB (version 01.002.000) on PS5. Many outlets recommend having at least 90 GB of free space to allow for patch overhead. It’s not yet clear how much additional space the patch itself will require, but given the estimates the total shouldn’t exceed a few extra gigabytes beyond that base.

Early Feedback & Gaming Community Sentiment

Early reviews and previews have been mostly positive. Some highlights:

  • GamesRadar praised the world, visuals, and combat, calling it “boundary-pushing” for PS5 in moments, while noting pacing issues and occasional overuse of climbing sequences.
  • IGN praised aspects like the setting and mechanics, while commenting that the story is “predictable but well-executed.
  • Push Square calls it a strong evolutionary follow-up to Tsushima, refining many of the old formula’s pitfalls.
  • Tom’s Guide praises the cinematic execution and polish but criticises that the game sometimes plays it safe and feels a little too familiar in its structure.
  • Washington Post emphasizes the emotional drama, character work, and strong storytelling, even if some genre tropes remain.
  • In Japan, Famitsu gave it a near perfect 39/40.

Critics seem to agree that Ghost of Yotei is a polished and ambitious title with positive reviews coming through.

Community & Pre-Order Reaction

On pre-order charts, Ghost of Yotei has ranked #1 in Australia and Canada and top in other major markets, attesting to strong fan anticipation. Some players express cautious excitement: while happy to see the return to a samurai/stealth format, there is concern about comparison fatigue (too many samurai/open-world titles) and whether Yotei will distinguish itself sufficiently.

Did you pre-order Ghost of Yotei or will you be waiting for the multiplayer release to play with your mates? Let us know in the comments below if you will be jumping into the action!

I am sure the game will be amazing. Honestly, I would be happy if it was all the same, just new character, new world map, same mechanics. I absolutely loved the first game, so anything new from the first is already a win to me. I will be low-key mad if they do anything to this games horse though haha!
